How to Best Cook Frozen Gyoza Dumplings

Have you ever bought a bag of frozen gyoza dumplings and wondered what’s the best way to cook them in a healthy way? Then this is a perfect guide for you. We will first fry the dumplings, then steam them, but we will be using a technique commonly done in Japan with a paper towel to make sure that the end result doesn’t turn out too oily. This recipe works with any type of gyoza whether it be chicken, pork or vegetable dumplings.

You can also use this same method for making non-frozen gyoza dumplings too!

Ingredients needed to cook gyoza dumplings

  • Frozen gyoza dumplings (about 14 pieces or any amount as long as it fits comfortably in the pan)
  • 1-2 Tbsp of water
  • 1 Tbsp of sesame oil
  • Ponzu sauce (any amount as desired)
  • A pinch of sesame seeds (optional)

How to make gyoza dumplings

  1. Pour the sesame seed oil onto the pan, spread it out evenly with a small dry paper towel all over the surface. The paper towel will soak up most of the oil but you should be left with a thin amount of it.
  2. Place the frozen gyoza dumplings onto the pan, make sure that the pieces don’t stick to each other
  3. Turn on the stove to medium
  4. Cook the bottom of the dumplings until they turn golden brown
  5. Pour in 1-2 tablespoons of water into the pan and place a lid on top of it
  6. Turn the heat down to low or medium-low and let it steam cook for 5 minutes
  7. Open the lid with a towel to not burn yourself, loosen the dumplings as needed with long chopsticks or another cooking utensil
  8. Place the dumplings on a plate and serve it with ponzu sauce and sesame seeds (optional)
  9. Enjoy!

FAQ

What is ponzu and where can I get it?

Ponzu is a citrus-based soy sauce that’s commonly used in Japanese cooking. It has a thin and fruity consistency that tastes very different from just using soy sauce. I would recommend using ponzu instead of simply soy sauce because gyoza dumplings tend to be a bit on the oily side, so the citrusy flavor works very well with this dish. Do I need a lid for this dish?

Yes, since we’re trying to cook the dumplings all the way through, a lid is necessary to ensure that all of the pieces cook thoroughly. If you don’t have a lid for your frying pan, you can grab a universal lid for pots and pans like the one below.
