Japanese Style Ham and Onion Dip
This is a great snack for everyone. You would need:
- 1/2 of a medium size onion
- 3 thin honey ham slices
- 1 tablespoon of bonito flakes (commonly called Katsuobushi in Japanese)
- 6 tablespoons of Japanese mayonnaise
- 1/2 teaspoon of Ponzu Sauce
- Dice the onion into very small pieces and soak them in water for 5 minutes. This will get rid of the strong spiciness of the onions.
- In the meantime, chop up the honey ham into very small pieces
- Drain the onion from the water and dry with a paper towel to get as much moisture out as you can.
- Mix the onions from #3, the ham in #2 and the bonito flakes, Japanese mayonnaise and black pepper in a bowl. Serve the mixture and enjoy.
For those of you who are not familiar with bonito flakes, they are typically used on Japanese food to make dashi stock, or to be used as toppings on foods such as Takoyaki and Okonomiyaki. You can get bonito flakes, ponzu and Japanese mayo in the links below.
